Name is Le Peuw… Skunk Le Peuw… double o smellin

If you’ve never had a dog get skunked, let me tell you a bit about it in 4 words or less. IT SUCKS REAL BAD. O.k. maybe its not the worst thing in the world, for you, but for the dog, its gotta be close to chaos. Here’s how it went down late last night.

After sitting on a bench, people watching, noticing all the stumbling home drinkers, who as a higher percentage than would be expected, tend to talk to themselves more so than people talk to strangers on the street. more on that in one of my future writings. So anyway, my doggie and I decide to stroll back to the house which is a good half-mile or more distance. Not 3 minutes into the walk, doggie decides to stick her nose into someone Else’s business and PFFFFFF… INSTANT SMELL. I am new at this as this is not actually my dog, but a Friend’s dog that I am watching for the summer, so tell me something… is foaming at the mouth a good thing?

Cause that is what she started doing. She was freaking out. Rubbing her head on anything dry like dirt whenever the opportunity expressed itself. All the while she is pulling me towards the house and is swaying her head back and forth, throwing ample amounts of froth in various directions. If you’ve ever seen the movie BEETHOVEN staring the personable Charles Grodin and the adorably intelligent Bonnie Hunt, then you get the scene, or better yet, the film TURNER AND HOOCH staring the ever-so-popular Tom Hanks and a really large frothing dog, only picture this with a much smaller lab/pit type mix. It was awful and it smelled real bad.

We eventually made it home, and I immediately threw her into the shower which she normally dislikes (to say the least), but almost willingly got in herself. What I found out later, is that perhaps I shouldn’t have gone in the house so soon. What I found out all night, is that web blogs on this sort of thing sometimes tell the truth. Everyone said the same thing… “wash your dog outside then go in the house later.”

After two baths and a ton of tomato juice, she smelled fine. But the entire freakin house was a mess (olfactory wise). It was already after midnight so all of the stores here were probably closed, so I just shut my eyes and imagined it wasn’t there for a while. I awoke around 8 and was immediately reminded of the situation. After reading some more blogs, I strolled down to the local pharmacy and bought some vinegar. The reports said to boil some vinegar for a while and hope for the best. Well after doing so for about 30 minutes, I couldn’t smell the skunk, but my eyes were burning and it stunk real heavy from vinegar (it sucked, but it was a very fair trade off at the time.)

I went out shopping after I showered and when I got back, it still smelled a bit from skunk but mostly, it just reaked from vinegar. I put coffee grounds all over the house which also seems to be wroking. Another boiling vinegar pot, some more coffee grounds and some incense should finish it off to a tolerable position by the days end. Perhaps going out isn’t a bad idea? I think I’ll leave the doggy here for a while!

As for the dog, she seems fine. She seems relaxed and the frothing stopped within a few minutes of the walk back home last night. She is laying on the couch now, probably dreaming of her new romantic interest up the street. What did we learn from this? I learned to never walk your dog in a neighborhood with skunks (which is unlikely here) and to wear a gas mask if you do. Did she learn any lessons. Most likely not as on the way home she was still ready to lunge in a neighbors yard where a cat resides… genius! current score LE PUEW 1: HUMAN AND DOG 00.

for some great info, check out this site. Its a blog site where apparently, this happens to a lot of people!
